Who is covered by OHIP?
Children up to age 19, and adults age 65 and over are covered by OHIP for a comprehensive eye exam once per year. Partial check-ups in between are covered if deemed necessary by the eye doctor.
Who is not covered by OHIP?
Eye exams for adults age 20-64 are not covered by OHIP, with a few
exceptions (eg. diabetics).
OHIP does not provide coverage for eyeglasses or contact lenses regardless of age.
If you have a vision care benefit/insurance plan, it may include coverage toward the cost of your eye exam. Some plans also include a separate benefit toward the cost of prescription glasses and contact lenses. All plans set a maximum dollar limit for each benefit, and you are responsible to pay the difference.
Be aware that most insurance companies provide vision care coverage only once every 2 years, and this is strictly enforced. If your insurance company allows it, we will gladly check your eligibility dates and coverage limits for you. If not, we recommend you protect yourself by contacting them directly before incurring any costs.
We are always happy to answer any questions you have about fees, insurance, and OHIP. Please use the contact-us form on this website, or call us at 519-843-2660.
